Only downside of smarter phones now is they know picture orientations and the "present" orientation of the phone so the picture is always upright. Unfortunately opening it on a computer or browser does have this "smartness" though.
Best recommendation is to upload your profile picture with our mobile app so that the photo is automatically rotated -- even gives you the ability to zoom in to find your best shot too.
